Ballyclare High School and Larne Grammar met in the final of the Schools U16 Shield competition of Wednesday afternoon at Roughfort.
The storms stayed away for this battle between two local rivals and both teams served up an excellent game of rugby.

Larne took an early advantage through a Will Millar penalty but Ballyclare hit back five minutes later with hooker Josh McColgan going over at the back of a maul. The impressive Harry Thompson added the extras to give Ballyclare a 7 – 3 lead after 15 minutes.

In an end to end game Larne pushed ahead just before half time with a well taken try from Dallan Bell, converted by Millar to take the score to 7 – 10 as the teams changed ends.

Ballyclare pulled it back to 10 – 10 just after the break as Thompson slotted over a penalty but Larne went back in front two minutes later with a try from centre Elliott Bagshaw to take it to 10 – 15.

Larne’s lead didn’t last long as Ballyclare drove over for their second try with Patrick McCleary finding the line. Thompson added the extras to give Ballyclare a 2 point lead with the score at 17 – 15.

Both teams game it their all in the final quarter but a second penalty from Ballyclare’s Thompson was the only score giving the High School a 20 – 15 win at the final whistle.
