Ulster U18 and U16 sides welcomed their Scottish midlands counterparts to Larne Rugby Club on Saturday afternoon for the first of two preseason hit outs over the weekend.
I caught up with the U18 sides on Saturday for their first game which took part over three 20 minute periods.
The Ulster side was pretty much in control from the start coming close on a couple of occasions before Tara O’Neill crossed out wide for the opening score after 10 minutes for a 5 – 0 lead.
The Scottish side defended resolutely but late tries from Ruby Starrett and Anna Wilson, both converted by Leah Irwin saw Ulster take a 19 – 0 lead into the first break.
The visitors continued to show impressive commitment in defence but Cara McLean and Beth McBurney both crossed before Luigseach Murnaghan competed a quick fire hat trick in 9 minutes. Irwin converted two to take the score to 48 – 0 to Ulster at the end of the second period.
The Scottish team, who had shipped a few knocks by this stage, continued to battle away in the final period. However Ulster closed the game out with a second score from McLean before Grace Simati and Laura Scott both crossed to finish off the game. Megan Creighton took over kicking duties to land one conversion and take the final score to Ulster U18 65 Scottish Midlands 0.
