Provincial Friendly: Ulster U16 Girls 24 Scottish Midlands U16 Girls 17

We caught up with Ulster U16 Girls on Sunday afternoon as they played their second mach against Scottish Midlands U16 Girls at Larne Rugby Club.

Ulster had been convincing winners in their Saturday game but their Scottish visitors certainly pushed them all the way in this game played over two 25 minute halves.

It was a fairly quiet opening first quarter which fell into a pattern of big carries from the Ulster forwards and quick breaks from the Scottish backs in between quite a few stoppages.

However, the game sprang to life in the second quarter with a great try from the Scottish side’s Niamh Waters who produced a couple of arcing runs and quick feet to finish up crossing for the opening try out wide to give Scotland a 0 – 5 lead.

Ulster hit back three minutes later with a strong finish from Lucy Logan to bundle over in the corner to take the score to 5 – 5.

Another lovely run from Scotland’s Waters saw her send full back Lucy Ronald clear for the visitors second try and with Waters adding the extras the Scottish team took a 5 – 12 into half time.

It looked ominous for Ulster as Waters again danced through the defence for her second try to take the score to 5 – 17 minutes into the second half.

Ulster started their comeback with a try from Rebecca Mason mid way though the second half, to take the score to 12 – 17 after the conversion by Chloe Dunbar and the home side piled on the pressure for the rest of the game.

Scrum half Tara Sherriff bundled over seven minutes later to tie the game and Dunbar pushed Ulster 19 – 17 in front with the conversion.
