Junior Cup: Carrickfergus 15 CIYMS 0 Group 1

We caught up with CIYMS at Carrickfergus on Saturday afternoon as they kicked off their season with a Junior Cup Group 1 match.

It was a bit of a scrappy first half at the Tom Simms Memorial Park on Saturday afternoon as the teams dusted off the cobwebs and adjusted to the new tackle laws in their first competitive match this season.

Carrick kept CI pinned in their own half for most of the first quarter

The flow of the game wasn’t helped by a few early injuries, with both teams having to swap out players in the opening minutes, but Carrick looked to be making the best fist of it as they kept CI pinned in their own half for the bulk of the first quarter.

A break out by CI hooker Finlay led to a good period of pressure from CI.

A break out by CI hooker Finlay sparked a period of pressure from CI midway through the first half but the Carrick defence held firm and the home side finished the first half with a try form winger Jake Hutchinson, after a period of pressure on the CI line, to take to score to 5 – 0 in Carrick’s favour as the teams changed ends and the rain came down.

The Belfast side started the second half well but the were unable to break the Carrick defence and the game continued to lurch from scrum to lineout with open play at a premium.

David Carse ran some good lines for Carrick in the second half.

Carrick’s full back David Carse provided most of the excitement with a few bustling runs with Ryan McGonigle supporting well. One burst from Carse ended with a penalty from Simon White to take the score to 8 – 0 about the 50 minute mark.

That man Carse stepped up again towards the end of the game to pick a fine line to split the CI defence and slide home under the posts. White added the extras to take the score to 15 – 0 in carricks favour at the final whistle.
