Senior Friendly: Ulster University Elks 2 Queen’s University 1

I caught up with the intervarsity pre season friendly between The Ulster Elks and Queen’s University on Wednesday evening at Jordanstown Sports Village.

I must say it was an absolute cracker of a game, top skills, fast paced and a little bit of edge, great stuff. Only problem was it had so many action points that I took a huge stack of photos as the lighting changed from bright sunlight to dusk and then full floodlights over the hour and a half of the game; so there was a bit of extra editing to do.

Plenty of action but no score in the first half between The Elks and Queen’s.

Both teams were playing some of their summer signings but they all seemed to fit in fairly seamlessly as the game hit a high standard from the off. Queen’s probably edged possession over the first two quarters but despite a few scrambles, at both ends, the first half ended without score.

Gabby Scott starts her run into the D for the opening score for The Elks

The Elks opened the scoring at the start of the second as Gabby Scott spun into the D to complete a wall pass and slide the ball in from a tight angle to take the score to 1 – 0. It didn’t seem to change the, already lively, tempo of the game and the third quarter ended with the home side defending the one point lead.

Alyssa Jebb celebrates her equalising score for Queen’s

Queen’s Jenna McCarlie  and Alyssa Jebb started to cause a bit of a stir in The Elks defence in the final quarter and, after an earlier miss, Jebb pulled it back to 1 – 1 with a few minutes to go.

A draw would have been a fair result but The Elks had other ideas and they went straight back up the pitch to create a penally corner as the final whistle blew.

Beth Harper sends the winner on it’s way in the final play of the game.

The Elks players surrounded the D for the final play but it only took one, the edge of the D drive from Beth Harper finding the net at the first attempt to give The Elks a 2 – 1 win.
