We caught up with Ulster University Elks, for the second time this week, as they prepare for their return to the All Ireland Hockey League this season.
Saturday’s opponents were Dublin’s Pembroke Wanderers who looked to enjoy the pre-pass back deluge that delayed the start by 5 minutes.

Refreshed by the downpour, both sides had plenty of zip in the opening exchanges and Pembroke got off to the best start with a goal after 8 minutes as Rachel O’Brien turned in a rebound to give the visitors a 0 – 1 lead.

The Elks responded well and there was plenty of goalmouth action before the home side were awarded a penalty stroke which was confidently dispatched by Serena Campuzano to take the score to 1 – 1 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams continued to push forward in the second quarter but The Elks looked to be getting on top and their efforts were rewarded by a cracking shot from Betty Scott to take the score to 2 – 1 as the teams changed ends.

The lively pace continued through out the third quarter and the Elks extended their lead to 3 – 1 as Lucy Craig scored directly from a penalty corner.

Pembroke had a chance with a late penalty corner of their own but a sharp save from Gemma Ferguson saw the Elks take a 2 goal lead into the final quarter.
Plenty of action but no goals in the final quarter, the Elks good value for their 3 – 1 win against Pembroke Wanderers.
