1st XI Superleague: Royal School Armagh 2 Portadown College 1

We caught up with, defending champions, The Royal School Armagh in their opening Superleague match where they hosted Portadown College at their new pitch at College Hill on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams appeared to be up for this one with Armagh forcing an early penalty corner before Portadown broke downfield for Emily Adamson to fire in from a tight ange to open the scoring.

The Royal School looked unfazed with this early setback and they methodically worked their way into the game. However, despite Armagh creating a few more penalty corner chances, the motivated Portadown defence coped well with the pressure and the visitors continued to look dangerous on the counter with Adamson leading the charge.

There were a few personal battles across the pitch between two sets of players familiar with each other which made for an entertaining first half but there were no further scores before half time, the teams turning round with Armagh chasing that one goal deficit.

Armagh levelled the game at the start of the third quarter with Hannah Redmond the first to react to a parried shot in the goal mouth.

The match continued in a similar vein to the first half and as the game went into the final quarter it was starting to look like it would end as a draw.

Armagh however found that bit extra in the closing stages and Grace McCool found the winner with a couple of minutes remaining.

Portadown looked for a quick response but it was Armagh that finished on top forcing a last play penalty corner to close out the game.
