I caught up with the Ulster Hockey Women’s Senior 2 match between Larne and south Antrim on a wet and breezy Friday night at Larne Grammar School.
It was an entertaining game between two battling sides. Larne took an early lead with Kerry McIlwaine opening the scoring after a nice turn on the edge of the D.

South Antrim hit back 9 minutes later in a busy first quarter with Jo Ore levelling the game with a cracking shot from out wide.

However Larne caught the visitors on the back foot from the restart with Ellen Lyle finding the net to give Larne a 2 -1 lead as the teams went into the first break.
South Antrim were quick out of the blocks in the second quarter with Ellen Rogers pulling it back to 2 – 2 from a Penalty corner but Larne went back in front before half time with Ellen Heggan getting the final touch on a drive from Anna McRoberts

The rain intensified in the third quarter which remained goalless and the teams went into the final quarter with Larne defending a one goal lead.
South Antrim pushed forward and midway through the quarter they found the equaliser with Sophie Rollins scoring much to the delight of her teammates.

Larne looked for a response in a tense final few minutes but there were no further goals the game ending as a 3 – 3 draw.
