The Ulster University Elks welcomed Monkstown to the Ulster University Sports Village on Saturday afternoon for their first fixture in the Women’s All Ireland League.
After a busy pre-season the Elks were keen to make a strong start but it was Monkstown who opened the scoring with captain Chloe Watkins netting a penalty stroke after a clash in the D.

The visitors continued to push forward throughout the first quarter but there was no further score and Elks went into the second quarter chasing a one goal deficit.
A penalty corner at the start of the second quarter saw the Elks pull it back to 1 – 1 as Serena Campuzano converted with a reverse stick from out wide.

The home side were now finding their form and a well worked attack at the end of the second quarter ended with captain Beth Harper getting the final touch to take the score to 2 – 1 as the teams changed ends.

A tight third quarter remained goalless and the teams went into the final quarter with just the one score in it. However a breakaway was finished in spectacular style by Jess McMaster to give the Elks some breathing space with the score at 3 – 1 with 10 minutes remaining.

Monkstown came close shortly after but the Elks closed the game out on the front foot marking an impressive start to their All Ireland campaign.
