On Saturday afternoon Queens faced Rainey in the Ulster Senior Cup at The Dub, Upper Malone.

Rainey opened the scoring in the 9th Minute, Scott McClean converting a penalty goal for a 3-0 lead. Queens replied with a Ben Gibson try on 11 minutes to lead 5-3.

Michael McCosker, 6, scored Rainey’s first try

Slowly but surely the bigger Rainey pack began to take control. From a lineout maul Michael McCusker drove over in the 23rd minute. McClean converted for a 10-5 Rainey lead.

From a similar lineout maul Ronan McCusker drove over in the 32nd minute. McClean converted for Rainey to lead 17-5.

In the 39th minute James Wright darted over on the right. Ben McFarland converted to bring Queens back to 12-17 at halftime.

Under the bodies Josh Stevens scored for Queens

The 2nd half was all Queens. Josh Stevens was driven over from a lineout maul on 58 minutes and McFarland converted to give Queens a 19-17 lead.

James Wright stretched to score his second try of the afternoon

After 63 minutes Wright stretched and found his way over on the left, close to the posts. McFarland’s conversion put Queens 26-17 up.

Cameron Megahey ran in from deep for Queens fifth try

On 74 minutes Queens attacked from deep and Cameron Megahey ran in from distance for a try, wide on the left. McFarland’s conversion had Queens 33-17 to the good.

Again, Queens ran from deep against a tiring Rainey defence. Ryan Davis was put away to score beside the posts, after 78 minutes. McFarland’s conversion had Queens leading 40-17.

Rainey had the final say. In the final move of the game Lee Montgomery claimed a try. McClean converted to leave a final score of 40-24 to Queens and a place in the next round.
