I caught up with the first half of the Ulster Women’s Championship 2 match between Queen’s University 2nds XV and Clogher Valley at the Dub on Sunday afternoon.
This was the first time we’ve caught up with Clogher Valley Women and they put in a disciplined display against an eager Queen’s side and it was good to see FRU Favourite Katie Heatherington feature for her home side.
Clogher applied the early pressure and the opened the scoring after five minutes with Katie Brown busting through the centre to go over under the posts, for Lucy Somerville to convert to give Clogher a 0 – 7 lead.

Queen’s enjoyed a period of possession but the clogher defence held firm and the visitors got their second try midway through the half as Jessica Carruth battled over from close range to push the score out to 0 – 12.

Lucy Somerville looked like she had battled over for a try earlier in the game but the move was called back. However the Clogher out half got her reward after finding a bit of space on the left to cross and finish close to the posts for a try she converted herself to take the score to 19 – 0.

It was still 0 – 19 in Clogher’s favour when I left at half time, Queen’s with a bit of work to do in the second half.
However, it was Clogher who were first to score in the second half with Amy Coulter crossing twice, one converted, to take the score to 0 – 31. 1
Queen’s staged a late comeback with tries from Ciara McKenzie, after a break by Ally McIlwaine, and Rebecca Mann. McIlwaine converted both to take the final score to Queen’s 14 Clogher 31.
- Thanks to Ally McIlwaine for the scorer details and the second half update. ↩︎
