Early Saturday morning Wellington College hosted Grosvenor Grammar School in a Schools Cup Preliminary Round C fixture at Carolan Road.

From kick off Grosvenor were ruthless and relentless. Wellington were put under pressure immediately. In the 5th minute it told when Stephan Buick scored for a 5-0 lead. In the 9th minute Mattie Meredith ran round under the posts for Ross Millar to convert for a 12-0 lead.
Wellington had rare visits to the Grosvenor half but were quickly repelled. Shea Taggart scored in the 10thminute to move Grosvenor out to 17-0. Meredith’s 2nd try in the 24th minute, followed by two Buick tries on 26 and 28 minutes, together with a Ross Millar try on 32 minutes, with two Millar conversions gave Grosvenor a very healthy 41-0 lead at halftime.

The break was the cue for a mass Grosvenor substitution. This initially affected continuity but Millar’s 45thminute try and James Walker’s conversion had Grosvenor 48-0 up.

Wellington put together phases and conjured a try for Finn Ritchie wide out on the right to bring the score back to 5-48, after 50 minutes.

Grosvenor responded with a Walker try, on 56 minutes, followed by a Rhys Hargy try on 62 minutes. A Joel McKittrick try, converted by Walker, as time ran out gave Grosvenor an impressive 60-5 win over a very game Wellington side.
