Women’s Premiership: Malone 31 Enniskillen 20

On Sunday afternoon Enniskillen were the visitors to Gibson Park to play Malone in a Women’s Premiership fixture. A drab grey Sunday afternoon was lit up by a great game in which the lead was always in jeopardy.

Zara Flack opened the scoring for Enniskillen, with the first of her two tries

Both sides set out their stall early on by running the ball at every opportunity. It was Enniskillen, who struck first. The ball was moved out into space on the right and Zara Flack had the pace to squeeze in at the corner for a 13th minute, 5-0 lead.

Malone responded when they took a quick tap penalty for Lauren Maginnes to crash over, under the posts. Grainne Murphy converted for Malone to lead 7-5 on 23 minutes. Enniskillen replied with a Sophie Meeke try, after 38 minutes. Enniskillen took a 10-7 lead into halftime.

Peta McAllister barged over for the first of her two tries

Meeke’s 2nd try on 46 minutes increased Enniskillen’s lead to 15-7, before Malone’s Peta McAllister barged her way through defenders to score after 50 minutes. Murphy’s conversion brought the score back to 14-15.

Lauren Maginnes look up to see the referee award her 2nd try

Flack’s second try, after 54 minute put Enniskillen out to 20-15. In the 58th minute Maginnes charged through defenders for her 2nd try. Murphy’s conversion put Malone into the lead 21-20.

McAllister’s 2nd try, after 60 minutes consolidated Malone’s 26-20 lead. Sarah Murphy’s try on 74 minutes secured Malone’s victory. Both sides played out the last few minutes before the final whistle blew on a 31-20 win for Malone.
