I caught up with the match between Banbridge Academy and Coleraine Grammar in the second round of the Ulster Hockey Schools 1xt XI Superleague on Wednesday afternoon at Havelock Park.
Unfortunately Coleraine were delayed due to traffic and the match started 30 minutes late. As I’d a 3:00 pm appointment at Dromore I was only able to cover the first 3 quarters of the game.
It was a pretty impressive display from the Banbridge side against a polished Coleraine side who had recorded a 1 – 2 win at Larne Grammar the previous week.

The Banbridge side worked hard in the first quarter to contain Coleraine who started on the front foot. The visitors had an early penalty corner and a couple of chances but by the end of the first quarter Banbridge had them contained and were beginning to push forward.

The Academy got their reward at the start of the second quarter when a nice interchange from a corner allowed Ellen Jack to get in a dangerous cross which Alyssa Somerville converted. Despite both sides creating chances the teams went into half time with Banbridge leading 1 – 0.
Coleraine pushed hard at the start of the third quarter but Banbridge contained them well and looked to create quite a few chances as the quarter continued. However there was no further score by the end of the third when I had to leave.

There were two goals in the final quarter with Mya Gray getting the winner for Banbridge after Coleraine pulled one back.
