Championship 2: Academy 39 Donaghadee 5

I caught up with Academy and Donaghadee at Roughfort on Saturday afternoon in an Ulster Rugby Championship 2 match. I had covered these two teams at the start of the season in a Junior Shield match where Academy had run out comfortable winners.

This game was a much stiffer challenge for the home team as Donaghadee put up strong resistance in the opening quarter. However, a break out by Academy led to an Aaron Heatley try in the corner, converted by Michael Wilson to give Academy a 7 – 0 lead.

Ray Dobson crossed of Dee in the first half.

Donaghadee hit back seven minutes later with Ray Dobson crashing over to take the score to 7 – 5.

Wilson added a penalty for the home side four minutes later to push the score along to 10 – 5 and Heatley added his second score with a spectacular dive into the corner to take the score to 15 – 5 at the break.

Aaron Heatley scored a first half brace for Academy

A try from Wilson at the start of the second half pushed the score out to 20 – 5 but Donaghadee were still in the game and they enjoyed an extended period of possession over the next 15 minutes.

Michael wilson added a try, penalty and three conversions to Academy’s total.

Unfortunately they were unable to break down the Academy defence and a try from Daniel Logan, converted by Conor Spence at the start of the final quarter wrapped up the try bonus point for the home team with the score now a 27 – 7.

Academy second half tries from Wilson, Logan and Linden

Late tries from Rory Linden and Ben Dewhurst added some icing to the cake for Academy who ran out winners by 39 – 5 after Wilson converted Dewhurst’s try.
