Under 16 Cup: Ballymena Academy 19 Dromore High 3

Ballymena Academy entertained Dromore High in a Schools U16 Cup fixture on Wednesday afternoon at Galgorm Road.

The match started in gale force winds and ended in an absolute deluge of rain but in between there was some good rugby played.

Dromore, started brightly and within 10 minutes forced a penalty from the home side which No 10, Alfie Clark, easily scored to take the score to 0 – 3.

Ballymena immediately upped the pressure and mid way through the half got a great running try with Callum Ritchie crashing over in the corner but it was not converted leaving the score a 5 – 3.

The enthusiasm of both teams was to be admired but there was no further scoring in the first half with the wind playing havoc to all kicks.

More of the same in the second half with both teams passing the ball well. It was the home team who stretched their advantage when Charlie Hargey broke through for a typical forward’s try and Seth Park slotted over the conversion to push the score out to 12 – 3.

It was all Ballymena now and minutes later, by winning a line out and then forming a ruck which drove all the way over Dromore’s try line, Otis Warwick was the last man up with the ball. Park added the conversion to take the score to 19 – 3.

The try seemed to signal a change in the weather and the heavens opened! The final 10 minutes were played in a deluge but the home team held out well to secure the victory and progress to the final.
