I caught up with the Junior 9 Cup match between CI Ladies 5th XI and Lisnagarvey Ladies 5th XI early Saturday afternoon at Belmont.
It was a fairly close opening quarter with both sides attacking freely, but neither side found their touch in front of goal.
Garvey opened the scoring towards the end of the first quarter with a fine strike from Louise Sinton, but CI were level within a minute as Mollie Sawyer dabbed the ball over the line for the equalizer as the quarter came to an end.
The visitors started to gain the upper hand in the second quarter after an early goal from Sophie Harper. However, despite creating a few chances, that was all they could manage until the break. The teams changed ends with CI trailing by a 1-2 deficit.
A golden third quarter from Garvey turned the game firmly in their favor. A quick brace from the energetic Tanisha Dowie pushed the score out to 1-4 before her partner in crime, Harper, added her second goal to take the score to 1-5 as the teams went into the final quarter.
CI tried to push for a breakthrough in the final quarter, but their accuracy in front of goal continued to elude them. As a result, Garvey advanced to the next round of the Junior 9 Cup with an impressive 5-1 victory.
