Men All Ireland : Lisnagarvey 1 Banbridge 4

We caught up with the early evening All Ireland Hockey League match between Lisnagarvey and Banbridge on Saturday at Comber Road.

The local derby is always keenly contested and this one was no different.

Matthew Nelson set the pace for Garvey by scoring in the second minute of the game, catching the opposition off guard and giving Garvey a 1 – 0 lead.

However, their advantage was short-lived as Jake Rowe equalized for Banbridge with a well-converted penalty corner in the 15th minute. Banbridge seized the momentum and took control of the match when Louis Rowe found the back of the net in the 17th minute, giving them a 1 – 2 lead which they held until half time.

It was stalemate in the third quarter but Banbridge added two more in the final quarter to secure their win.

In the 55th minute, Louis Rowe showed his prowess again with another goal from a converted penalty corner, extending Banbridge’s lead to 1 – 3.

As the game progressed, Garvey struggled to stage a comeback, and their hopes were extinguished when Matthew McKee scored the final goal of the game in the 62nd minute, securing a comprehensive victory for Banbridge with a scoreline of Lisnagarvey 1 Banbridge 4.

With Banbridge still playing catch up, following their European adventures, they have a chance to go to the top of the EYHL tonight (Tuesday 17th October) if they beat Annadale by two clear goals. Of course, their Belfast rivals may have something to say about that!
