Championship Women: Queen’s University II 27 North Down 24

On a sunny, autumnal Sunday afternoon Queens 2 hosted North Down at The Dub in a Women’s Championship B fixture.

From kick off it was a forward dominated game, with both packs crashing into each other in an attempt to gain ground. There was little opportunity for backs show their pace.

Kate Berry opened the scoring from Queens

On 18 minutes Kate Berry took the ball at pace and crashed over, beside the posts to put Queens 5-0 up. North Down responded immediately when Amy Lennon showed her pace to squeeze in at the left corner to make it 5-5.

Aoife Redmond scored beside the posts

Queens retook the lead after 27 minutes when Aoife Redmond went over, under the posts. Zoe Fleming converted to put Queens 12-5 up.

Queens attacked from deep and tries from Victoria Lee, 30 minutes, and Amy Elder 39 minutes, had Queens leading 22-5 at halftime.

A Lee try after 48 minutes seemed to have Queens in an unassailable position 27-5 up.

Jenny Collins outpaced the Queens defence to score from deep

However, Jenny Collins try, after 65 minutes, when she ran in from deep, converted by Eve Miller, brought North Down back to 12-27.

Angel Shaw ran in for North Down’s 3rd try

North Down spotted a weakness in Queens defence and ran another try in from deep. Angel Shaw’s 67 minute try converted by Miller, had North Down at 19-27.

Forward power had Emer Campbell over in the left corner to leave North Down only 24-27 down on 24-27.

Queens saw out the last minute to record a 27-24 victory and retain 4th place in Women’s Championship B.
