Championship 1: CIYMS 29 Dromore 16

I caught up with the Championship 1 match between CIYMs and Dromore at Belmont Park on Saturday afternoon.

Dromore applied the early pressure in the first ten minutes but CIYMS gradually worked their way into the game and it was the home team that opened the scoring 16 minutes in with Max Shannon stretching for the line close to the posts for Paddy Beverland to convert for a 7 – 0 lead.

Opening try from CI’s Max Shannon and early penalty from Paddy Beverland.

Dromore pushed hard for a response but the CI defence worked hard and CI went further ahead thanks to a Beverland penalty 25 minutes in to take the score to 10 – 0 somewhat against the run of play.

Dromore had had the buk of possession and they finally got their reward when their wing forward broke clear down the middle to dive over for a try , converted by Adam McDonald to take the score to 10 – 7.

However, CI were picking up points in nearly every trip into Dromore territory and 3 minutes later they were back to being 10 pints clear as Joe Graham crossed out wide to take it to 17 – 7 after Beaveland converted.

Dromore pulled it back to 17 – 13 at half time with two successful penalties from McDonald.

The home team were first to score after the beak with Scott Finlay going over after a break down the left, the hooker showing an impressive strike rate this season. No conversion for this one leaving the score at 22 – 13.

Another McDonald penalty pulled it back to 22 – 16 five minutes later and it looked like it could go anyway at this point.

The home team gave themselves some breathing room when quick thinking from captain Mark Scott at the back of a ruck saw him break free to dive over under the posts to take it to 29 -16 after Beverland added the extras.

There was still 30 minutes left and Dromore spent most of it on the attack. However, CIYMS had their measure at the breakdown and they held on reasonably comfortably for a 29 – 16 win at the final whistle.
