We caught up with the tremendously talented Ulster U18 Hockey team on Sunday afternoon as they took on Leinster East U18 Hockey in the third round of the Interprovincial series at Havelock Park.

The Ulster U18 side faced their toughest test to date against a determined Leinster East.

It looked as though the Ulster were going to run away with the game when Kia McCartney won a penalty stroke, which she duly converted, towards the end of the first quarter only to be followed by a super shot from Grace McCool to give the home side a 2 – 0 lead at the first break.

To their credit, Leinster East fought back well in the second quarter and they closed the gap when the impressive Amy Hancock pulled it back to 2 – 1 mid way through the second quarter.

Ulster responded with a cracker from Katie “The Goal Machine” Herron to push it out to 3 – 1 as the teams went into the half time break.

Leinster refused to lie down and O’Brien netted her second to take the score to 3 – 2 as we went into the final quarter.

A strike from Joni Cunningham eased the nerves and Ulster held on reasonably comfortably for a 4 – 2 win.

The result leaves Ulster U18 undefeated this series having scored a colossal 22 goals and conceded 3.
